Sports In the 1930’s

This quote can relate to the great depression and how people didn't stop fighting because they knew it would get better. Throughout the hardship athletes such such as Babe Ruth even had a decrease in his salary, but this didn't stop fans or athletes from doing what they love witch was watch and play sports. The World Cup was evidence that fans used sports to forget their troubles, as Uruguay won the first ever World Cup In the 1930´s. The great depression impacted many sports such as baseball, basketball, and football causing many teams to cut salaries of many athletes. Although the great depression caused economic hardship for many people, but sports kept people entertained and made them forget their troubles. First of all athletes such as Babe Ruth even had a decrease in their salaries because of the great depression. Sports heroes.htm stated that,”Babe ruth was one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Many polls place him as the greatest baseball player in history.”(Pg 1, timeline index) also sports in the 1930’s was still as exciting as ever, with many records getting smashed. The Great Depression took its toll on sports, mostly everyone took a salary cut and all ball park renovations were suspended. In all a lot of professional players had their salaries decreased. Secondly, the first world cup was held in the 1930’s in Uruguay. History.com stated that,”on July 13, 1930 France defeats Mexico 4-1 and the United States defeats Belgium 3-0 in the first ever world cup football matches, played in Montevideo Uruguay.”(Pg 1, Published by A+E networks) Due to depression in Europe, many European players afraid their day Jobs would not exist when they returned, were either unable or unwilling to attend the tournament. Europe was also in economic problems just like America was so many teams couldn't go to the first World Cup, but in all it was a very entertaining time in the 1930’s with Uruguay winning the first World Cup against Argentina. Lastly sports such as football, basketball, and baseball were greatly affected by the great depression causing them to cut salaries. Refrence.com stated that, “while sports took a dive during the great depression, baseball remained America's most popular sport.”(Pg 1, History. com) But there was Baseball, boxing, and track they were three of the most popular sports in the 1930’s, due largely to the stars that captivated the fans of their respectives sports. Interest in basketball, football, soccer and other major sports of today did not catch interest until decades later in America. All in all, the Great Depression caused economic hardship for many people , sports kept people entertained and helped them forget their worries. First of all the greatest athletes of all time kept the fans entertained with their amazing plays and talent. In addition the World Cup was a big part in the 1930’s with many countries attending it. Also baseball, boxing, and tract were the big attractions in America. In conclusion the 1930’s was a very devastating time, but sports kept people going and helped them through their everyday lives. |
